A rare ‘Ladies Literate in Arts’ sterling silver sash badge or brooch awarded by St Andrews University in the late 19th century.
The badge would originally have been worn on a sash but could also be used as a brooch.
The front of the badge reads ‘University of Saint Andrews 1877’ which is when the award was first created. To the centre is an image of Saint Andrew and his cross along with the initials ‘LLA’. The reverse bears full hallmarks for Edinburgh assay office, the silversmith ‘AS’ and the date letter ‘g’ for 1888. Additionally stamped with the retailer’s mark of ‘Christie & Kilpatrick, Robe Makers to the University’.
It measures 2.25 x 1.5 inches (5.7 x 3.8 cm) and weighs 30 grams.
