Description

This lovely antique gilt-framed mirror is of large proportions. We would estimate to date from the first half of the nineteenth century, although it may be earlier. The mirror is oval in shape with a gilt painted and gesso decorated wooden frame. The outer frame has a rope-twist effect border with a beaded effect inner rim. There mirror has two sections, an outer surround with decorative dividers, and in inner oval section. The mirror has a planked back which is more modern than the rest of the mirror.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. The gilt paintwork is grubby, rubbed and worn, with some cracking and loss to the gesso, mainly to the beaded inner rim. There is some cracking to the woodwork of the frame where the mirror brackets have been changed over the years. The gilt paintwork has been touched up in places. There are some white paint flecks to the frame. The mirror has some surface scratching and some areas of corrosion to the backing.
