Description

Artist - Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583), a Reinaissance painter, engraver and printer from the Netherlands. We believe the cutter of the woodblock to have been Josse von Gietleughen (active c.1745).

Title - Imp. Caes. M. Opel. Sev. Macrinus Aug.

Details - Macrinus was Roman Emperor from 217-218, and was executed in 218. We believe this rare woodcut to be an original from Goltzius' book published in various different languages between 1557 and 1560, Vivae Omnium Fere Imperatorum Imagines, a C. Iulio Caes. Usque a Carolum V et Ferdinandum eius Fratrem. This is from the French version, published in 1559. Goltzius' book was one of the first uses of the chiaroscuro technique in book form, and this portrait is striking in tones of brown with white highlights. We believe the portrait to be based on a coin from the period. The full page of the book is retained, but is folded at the bottom. There is French text on the reverse of the page. The woodcut has been professionally mounted and framed in a modern frame.

Condition - Overall in good condition. The page of the book has been folded at the bottom, and there is some loss around the edges of the page. The page has some foxing (brown spotting) and is a little discoloured. The frame has some scuffing and wear and a few knocks.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Visible Image Size - 17.5cm diameter
Frame - 53.5cm by 53.5cm, 4cm deep.
