Description

This attractive pedestal desk dates from the mid-nineteenth century. It is of large proportions, similar to a partners' desk, and is designed assuming that both sides of the desk can be acessed, but there is only one kneehole. The desk has a green leather inset writing surface with gilt tooling and carved edges. Beneath the top at the front are three drawers with a three-drawer pedestal at either side. The drawers have replacement brass handles. Most of the drawers retain their locks and escutcheons (one of each is missing) but please note that no keys are present. At the back of the desk are two cupboards, each with a removable wooden shelf inside. The cupboards have replacement locks and keys, although the lock on one cupboard does not catch. The desk is supported on a pedestal base with attractive carved edges.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of restoration and repair in places. One lock and one escutcheon are missing from the drawers at the front and no keys are present. Replacement keys are present for the cupboards at the back but one lock does not catch. There is some cracking to the central drawer front and some repairs to the drawer fronts where the handles have been changed.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 83cm high, 133cm wide, 89cm deep (to maximums).
