Description

A fine set of original Bolas boleadoras, also known as bolas, a throwing weap0n used to capture animals by entangling their legs.
Made of rawhide, some deterioration to the weighted balls commensurate with age.

Very hard to find an original set such as these.
Measurement: approximately 106cm in length (each line).

General information:

Construction:
Bolas are made of two or three lines of cords that are knotted together at one end. At the other end of each line is a weight, such as a stone, leather bag with stones, or lead shot.

Use:
To use bolas, hold one end in your hand and twirl the other two ends over your head before throwing them onto the animal's legs. The rotating bolas will wrap around the animal's legs, causing it to stumble and fall.

History:
Bolas were used by South American Indians for hunting, and by the Inuit (Siberian aborigines). They have also been found in pre-Hispanic settlements in Patagonia, where indigenous peoples used them to catch guanaco and ñandu
