1960 Ianthe Sputnik Retro Floor Standing Ashtray

Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this wonderfully trendy for those who love the 60s, Ianthe Floor Standing Ashtray which is the epitome of the retro Sputnik designs around in the Sixties. It is modelled with three chrome legs, a wooden body with metal liner and the top ashtray section also in chrome. The large dished top has a double cigarette holder and the whole central dish lifts up to expel the cigarettes into the body, by pulling up the knob, which also has a wooden disk in the top to tone with the bowl. The ashtray was made by a Company called Ian Heath Ltd of Birmingham, who owned the trademark, who applied for a patent for this ashtray. The Registered Design Number for this model is 897588, which dates it to 1960 They also made a columnar floor standing ashtray, which is more commonly seen than this much rarer model. Ian Heath Ltd began manufacturing in Birmingham in 1952, and although the firm produced products throughout the 1950s and 1960s, production began to slow down and eventually seems to have stopped completely by the 1970s. Thekir main products were silver plated trays, candlesticks, bowls, as well as companion sets and fire irons.
For those not around in the fifties, Sputnik 1 (/ˈspʌtnɪk, ˈspʊtnɪk/, Russian: Спутник-1, Satellite 1), sometimes referred to as simply Sputnik, was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957 as part of the Soviet space program. It sent a radio signal back to Earth for three weeks before its three silver-zinc batteries became depleted. Aerodynamic drag caused it to fall back into the atmosphere on 4 January 1958.
The legs unscrew for ease of shipping and the bowl dismantles by uncrewing the nut at the bottom in order to remove the contents when full.
