Description

Magnificent Edward & Roberts Victorian wind-out extending dining table in golden quarter-sawn oak and with seven leaves. In the Jacobean Revival style this large 54in wide table smoothly extends from 7ft 4.5in to 20ft using a double Joseph Fitter ‘screw expander’ mechanism allowing it to seat up to 22-24 people. The rounded rectangular top has a moulded and channeled edge and carved frieze below with super leaf carvings to the leg blocks and brackets, stands on six substantial cup & cover shaped legs heavily carved with acorn, oak and acanthus leaves and concealed castors.

Sympathetically cleaned and repolished using traditional methods, medullary rays from the quarter-sawn cut of the oak produce the attractive ‘tiger grain’ pattern, some marks, wear & fading consistent with age. A double system of solid mahogany runners gives the impressive length whilst the centre legs provide additional support. Stamped on the runners to both sides. Replacement winder handle is included. Would also make a fantastic boardroom or conference table.

Edwards & Roberts were acclaimed English cabinetmakers founded in London in 1845 and who specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu making reproductions of earlier styles like that of the Jacobean Revival and their Thomas Hope ebony & brass inlaid mahogany chair in the collection of the V&A Museum. They were able to produce superb quality English furniture using some of the finest quality timbers and became one of the leading cabinet makers during the Victorian period.  As well as making and selling their own furniture, they also retailed, restored and adapted antique furniture. The company ceased trading in 1899.
