Description

Map of the county of Pembrokeshire in South Wales by John Speed. This map dates from 1611 and was part of an illustrated history “ The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain”. It is beautifully hand coloured with town plans of Pembroke and St Davids, both mapped and drawn by Speed himself - his series of maps were the first by a significant map maker to include town plans and he includes rich heraldry pertaining to the county. On the reverse is the original printing in English, describing the county and giving its history.
The map is glazed front and back and presented in a traditional 1 1/2 inch Hogarth frame.
It is in good condition for its age, with a few minor creases and blemishes.
In its frame it’s dimensions are : width 23 1/2 inches (60 cm), height 19 inches (48 cm), depth 1 inch (2.5 cm).
