Description

An antique Korean stained pine coin chest on sleigh-type stands with notable iron mounts, hinges and lock, circa 1920. The lid opens to reveal a natural coloured interior with plenty of space for storing games, toys, blankets etc.

The Korean ton-kwe coin chest began life as storage for the 'Mun', the main currency of Korea from 1633 onwards which, being of small denominations, were strung together to form chains of coins. Originally made from elm, from the 20th century the majority of ton-kwe were constructed from pine and reinforced with iron.
