Description

A magnificent large carved and weathered marble bust of Diana the huntress, late 18th - early 19th century.
Turned sharply to her right, her oval face with full parted lips and large eyes.
Wearing a tiara in her long deeply-drilled and carved wavy hair parted in the center and gathered in a bun at the back. Her torso clothed with a traditional Dorian chiton with deeply carved folds.

The bust has a superb weathered patina and has surface ware and small chips with some old damage to the nose. The bust has never had a socle and was probably once situated in a niche or on a pedestal.
The overall condition is excellent.
Further information - This is probably a copy of the 1st/2nd Century Roman over-lifesized statue of Diana of Versailles , which is currently on display in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
The roman statue is a copy of a lost Greek bronze original attributed to Leochares, c. 325 BC.
