Description

A fine pair of 17th century Romayne panels probably French.
The oak panels are lavishly carved with birds and foliage with a cherub at the top and a male and female portrait roundel in the centre.
The Romayne fashion of carved furniture and panels spread from Italy across Europe and England in the 16th century. With many different designs, but all featuring portrait heads or busts set in medallions, which was the main characteristic of the style.
One of the panels has had some restoration, all be it done very well and another has some losses to the sides commiserate with age. Overall the panels are in very good condition with superb colour and patination.
