Description

An elaborate 16th century Nuremberg iron bound chest also known as a Armada chest.
The chest has incredibly detailed and ornate ironwork and is covered in riveted strapwork with engraved decoration depicting flowers and rolling foliage all over. The front of the chest has a large decorative dummy lock plate having a double headed eagle , symbolizing power and dominion. The chest has carrying handles and pivoting hasps which would have once been padlocked.
Unfortunately at some point - probably in the 19th century the lock has been completely replaced with the key also being later, although it is in fully functioning order.
Overall the chest is in excellent condition and is a very interesting example.
