Description

A large 17th century carved oak panel depicting saint Cosmos, and set within a later ebonised frame.
Saint Cosmos was the brother of St Damien, both were born in Arabia in the 3rd century and were known for their skill in the science of medicine and surgery, to which they never charged any money. Both suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian.

Beautifully carved ,St Cosmas is centred in the panel with a medicine bottle to his left and a sword to his right. Above is a winged angel with a book, and an abundance of rolling foliage form a cartouche around the subjects and symbols.

The panel is in fantastic condition and is ready to hang.
