17thC English Antique Portrait - Circle of Kneller


A stunning late 17th Century English Antique oil on canvas portrait , understood to be Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax and Viscount Sunbury , (Born 16th April 1661 - Died 19th May 1715).
Montagu was the fifth son of the 1st Earl of Manchester.
A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, where he established a lasting relationship with Isaac Newton, he became a member of the House of Commons in 1691. Enjoying a number of Governmental roles, he was responsible for the establishment of The Bank of England. His roles included, Chancellor of the Exchequer (1694 - 1699) and First Lord of The Treasury (1714 - 1715).
This fine portrait is presented in a period gesso frame.
Condiition - craqueleur to paint surface. Cleaned and relined prior to our ownership.
