18th Century Hooped Back Windsor Chair

18th Century Hooped Back Windsor Chair
English, West Country,
Circa 1780.
Description:
This fine example of a hooped back Windsor chair, with traces of original green paint. Give this chair an exceptional presence with its primitive construction, patina & colour.
The Windsor-type construction is derived from the primitive 'staked', 'peg-leg' or stick construction which has always been associated with the most elementary antique furniture used by the poor and especially the rural labouring classes.
The hooped back which has been steam-bent from a single piece of ash, the ends of which terminate in the arm bow, again in ash. Along with the vertical spindles which make up the back rest. The shaped saddle seat is made from a thick piece of elm. The legs & stretchers, made from ash. The back legs are simple in construction having been hand drawn. It is the front legs and stretchers which have been turned to give appealing detail to this chair.
Dimensions:
37 in. (94cm.) high
24 in. (60cm.) wide
19 in. (48cm.) deep
