Trotter Charles, Edinburgh, Scotland cabinet maker, upholsterer (fl.1840-52)
Charles (b.1816-d.1890) was involved with the business of his father, William Trotter, until 1838 when he set up on his account. In 1840 he married Elizabeth Dowbiggin, daughter of the London upholsterer Thomas Dowbiggin. Charles was listed as cabinet maker and upholsterer to her Majesty at 9 Princes Street (Post Office Directory, 1850). Charles was recorded in the Lord Chamberlain’s accounts in 1851-52 for Balmoral and the 1851 census listed him as master upholsterer employing 100 persons and living at 21 Regent Terrace, South Leith.
Other recorded commissions include: Taymouth Castle (Marquess of Breadalbane) - Trotter supplied the detailed carved features for the banner hall and library and also practical antique furniture for the Castle in 1839-40. Chapel of St Margaret's Convent, Edinburgh - Trotter received the commission to make the oak pews and screen, 1842. A screen fragment from the Chapel is now at the National Museum of Scotland. Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh - pulpit, 1843, illus. Jackson (2024), p. 210. Charles Trotter retired from business in 1852, moving to the newly acquired estate at Woodhall, near Blairgowrie. The business was continued by three employees as Potts, Cairnie and Ray. Source BIMFO.
