Alfred Williams 1824-1905 Oil Landscape Alfred W Williams William Family Landscape %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this large, rare oil on canvas by the artist ALFRED WALTER WILLIAMS, who has signed the painting A. W. Williams in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1885. The painting depicts a landscape view, possibly in Wales, with a shepherd and his border collie sheepdog herding a flock of sheep. A woman wearing a black bonnet and red cloak and sitting side-saddle on a grey horse is talking to the shepherd. There is a windmill and a cottage in the distance and, slightly closer and to the right, another cottage with smoke coming from the chimney. It is a blustery day and there are clouds scudding across the sky.

ALFRED WALTER WILLIAMS (1824-1905) was the youngest son of Edward 'Old' Williams, the father of the Williams family of painters and his siblings include Arthur Gilbert (who changed his name from Williams to his second Christian name to avoid confusion) and Sidney Richard Percy, who also changed his name for the same reason. Alfred's wife Florence Elizabeth Thomas was also an exhibited painter. He lived in London and Surrey. Bibliography J. Reynolds 'The Williams Family of Painters'. 1975. There is an excellent biography and a photograph of the artist on Wikipedia.

ALFRED WILLIAMS exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1843-1891 and works exhibited included scenes of the Thames, Wales, Scotland and Italy. He was a landscape painter in oils and occasionally watercolour and painted in a similar style to his brother Sidney Percy. According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited 76 works at the Royal Academy, 42 at the British Institution, 79 at Suffolk Street, 4 at the New Watercolour Society and 108 at various other London exhibitions. One of his paintings is in the Victoria & Albert Museum.

The many auction listings for ALFRED WILLIAMS, may be found at artnet.com (93 listings), findartinfo.com (49) and artprice.com (103) etc. His works are also often found in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. His oils reach the thousands and the record for a large watercolour is over £1,000. More biographical information may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists, and British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu.

The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" swept gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
