Antique Colonial merchant’s chest

Antique Colonial merchant’s chest
This Antique Colonial merchant’s chest was first crafted in the first half of the 19thc. using an Indian hardwood.
This chest was originally made for a European, to be used as a secure chest for transporting valuables, on the arduous journeys around India.
These chests make superb coffee antique tables as well as conversation pieces. Your imagination gets sparked, as you envisage the stories this could tell of its perilous travels either by cart, wagon, elephant, or sailing ship.
The top is multi boarded joined by blacksmith made iron protection straps. It has a small burn mark to the top that by repute, came after a skirmish on one of its journeys. The ¾ lids opens on a hinge to reveal a vast open storage area.
The exterior has the blacksmith made iron corners and long strap hinges. The lock plate has a pair of decorated iron hasps.
This lovely trunk is finished all the way around and so can be used away from the wall. These are especially good as interesting coffee antique tables.
120cms wide 47 1/4ins
72.5cms deep 28 1/2ins
52.5cms high 20 3/4ins
All dimensions are approximate.
This Antique Colonial merchant’s chest is an item of antique furniture that is a very green product that has not affected the environment we live in.
