This is a good quality small antique English river landscape painting by J. Phipps, painted using acrylic on board, circa 1930, set within a good quality later gilt frame, in excellent condition. This acrylic painting, which is painted on board, is very well painted. It depicts a quintessential English river landscape scene, painted on a hazy summers’ day, of a peaceful river meandering through a wooded landscape. There is detail of summer flowers growing on the steep grassy banks and rolling hills can be viewed in the background. The acrylic painting is signed “J. Phipps” in bottom right corner. Little is known about the provenance of this artist. This acrylic painting has been re-framed in a later good quality ornate gilt frame, which is in excellent condition.
The river landscape painting would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This is a well-balanced and restful scene, one of which the viewer would not tire. The picture has been re-framed in a later good quality gilt frame, which is also in excellent condition. Nominal old age marks and wear to the leading edges of the gilt frame, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The back of the frame incorporates a board and hanging string. This river landscape painting is ready to hang.
