Antonio Bignoli 1812-1822 Italian Church Asti


We are delighted to offer for sale this-mid Victorian Italian watercolour by the artist ANTONIO BIGNOLI, who has signed, dated and entitled the painting verso, Antonio Bignoli and S. Secondo Asti Agosto 1857. The painting also bears an exhibition label for 1857.
The painting depicts a view of a small square in Asti, behind which stands the thirteenth century church of the Collegiata di San Secondo, which is situated in the mediaeval centre next to the Palazzo Civico. The crypt is from the 6th century. Asti is the capital of the privince of asti, near Turin, in the Piedmont region of N. W. Italy.
ANTONIO BIGNOLI was born in Milan in 1812 and was a watercolourist and portraitist. He was a student of Luigi Sabatelli. In the 19th Lombardy Show in Milan, some of his watercolours were exhibited including 'The Cellist', 'Costume', and 'Portrait of a Lady'.
Biographical details for this artist may be found in Commenducci's Dictionary of Modern Italian Painters and Engravers, Pub. Milan 1962, Benezit , Bolaffi Encyclopedic Dictionary of Italian Painters & Engravers from the 11th - 20th Century, Pub. Turin 1972 and in Thieme-Becker, Pub Leipzig 1992.
The record price achieved for one of his watercolours in recent years is £4,400, but the average price is somewhere in the upper hundreds, although his works only occasionally come to the market and then mainly in Italy.
He died in Milan in 1886.
The painting is newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is framed in 1 1/4" gilt foliate frame, which tones with it very well. It is ready to hang.
