Arthur W. Gay 1901-58 Watercolour Spring Flowers


This is a lovely, fresh watercolour of Spring Flowers in a waisted green glass vase with a frilly tim and is very appropriate for the season. There are varietes of narcissi, and daffodils, as well as pussy willow catkins.
Arthur Wilson Gary was born on 19th March, 1901m in Bristol. In 1919 he was an apprenticed litho artist and worked for 30 years at the Bristol studios of A. S. & A. Robinson lithographic printers. He was elected a Member of the Bristol Savages in 1928 and exhibited there for more than 30 years. He exhibited 17 paintings at the Royal West of England Academy 1925-49. He died at Redland, Bristol in June 1958.
He initially painted watercolours of dogs, birds, flowers and landscapes, but later in his career he painted portraits in oils. There are 7 of his paintings in the National Collection which may be viewed at ArtUK.org and there are 4 of his portraits in Bristol Museum and AG. His portrait of one of the Mayors of Bristol is in the Council House in Bristol, and the Peace Museum in Bradford has a painting by his of a bible reading conscientious objector under military escort.
He was the only son of five children. He married Muriel J. Gadd in 1922, and in 1934, they had a son Timothy. According to the 1939 Register, he was listed as a Printers Lithographic Draughtsman.
He is listed in Jeremy Wood's Dictionary 'Hidden Talents'.
The watercolour is newly mounted in gilt and is framed in a 1 1/8" mottled gilt cushion frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: Very good. There is no foxing or loss of colour. The mount is new and the frame is in extremely good condition.
