Ashton Cannell Watercolour Port Erin Isle of Man Edward Ashton Cannell 1927-1994 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer this small but beautifully formed and executed sunset watercolour by the artist E. Ashton Cannell, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The artist has entitled the painting verso Evening Sky, Port Erin, Isle of Man. The painting depicts a view of the harbour at Port Erin in the south west of the Isle of Man, with the Quay to the left and Bradda Head to the right, which almost encircle the harbour and protect it from the worst of the Irish Sea waves. On top of Bradda Head, is Milner's Tower, which was built in 1871 in memory of a local philanthropist William Milner of the Milner's Safe Co. Ltd. The Tower is built in the shape of a key and has a 40 step spiral staircase inside and it is said that it is sometimes possible to see the Mountains of Mourne from the top. The treatment of the sky is what so attracted us to the watercolour, it is magnificent.

Edward Ashton Cannell RSMA BWS was born on 1st September 1927 in the Isle of Man. He attended art school there and later at Liverpool College of Art.
