An attractive small unframed view of the West Sussex town of Arundel on thick textured cream-coloured paper signed by Sydney Maiden and dated 1960. The view is from fields with cows and farm workers near wooden sheds occupying the near distance, looking onto the town with the Cathedral occupying a dominant position and the Castle only partially captured in the image on the right. The reverse has an unfinished watercolour.

Biography: Sydney Joseph Fabricius Maiden was a landscape and figurative painter in oil and watercolour. He was born in India in 1893 and served as an officer in the East Kent Regiment in both wars. He lived in London and later in Chipstead, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He exhibited in the 1930s at the Goupil Gallery, the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy. Sydney Maiden's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realised prices depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The record price for this artist at auction is 2,332 USD for an oil on canvas of Ramsgate harbour, sold in 2012.
