A.W. Brereton Watercolour Interior Milan Cathedral

We are offering for sale this stunning and large architectural watercolour of the interior of Milan cathedral by the artist A. W. Brereton (attributed). The painting depicts a corner of the cathedral near to a glazed door through which sunlight is streaming. There are several columns of gothic tracery stonework leading to the arched roof. There are two statues of angels holding incense burners mounted on the columns and a large church candle mounted on a plinth, next to which a woman is praying. There are priests and worshippers dressed in almost mediaeval costume.
The watercolour is, unfortunately, unsigned, but we recently saw at auction an almost identical watercolour of this scene, although much smaller, which was signed A. W. Brereton. The painting was undoubtedly by the same hand. We have found a listing in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) for a Miss Annie Brereton who exhibited a painting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1906, from an address at 8, St. James's Square, Holland Park, London, but we cannot verify that this is the same artist.
The painting has been newly mounted in acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 2 1/4" dull mottled gilt cushion style frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 26" x 19 1/4" - 66cm x 48.85cm
Frame size: 36 5/8" x 29 3/8" - 93cm x 74.6cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Excellent condition with no foxing or fading. Newly mounted in acid free mountboard and newly framed.
