Benjamin D.Sigmund 1857-1947 Watercolour Cattle


We are delighted to offer for sale this excellent watercolour by the celebrated artist Benjamin D. Sigmund, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and inscirbed it verso Original No. 1875. The painting depicts a group of brown and brown and white cattle watering in a still river. There is a small cottage on the opposite bank.
This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are listing.
Benjamin D. Sigmund, 1857-1947, was a genre and landscape painter, principally in watercolours and mostly 'plein air'. He was born in St. Pancras, London in 1857, and, according to census records, lived in various parts of the home counties and Devon, prior to his death in Barnstaple, Devon in 1947 at the age of 90. Although he exhibited widely, mainly between 1880 and 1904, little is known about his life.
He exhibited 31 paintings at the Royal Academy, 25 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 34 at the RI, 17 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, etc. Between 1880 and 1893, he exhibited 85 paintings at London Exhibitions, according to Grays Dictionary, which terminated in 1893. He was a prolific artist and there are 114 auction listings at artnet, 134 at artprice, 59 at findartinfo and 48 at arcadja. There are many examples of his work available for viewing at the above sites and on google images.
There are currently two smaller watercolours by this artist on the internet for around £800.
The painting is mounted with wash lines and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" ornate gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
