c.1880 English Oil on Canvas of a Dog in a Kennel

The well-sized nineteenth century gilt framed oil on canvas depicting a slumbering hound with his bowl in an arched stone brick built kennel with indistinct signature.
The painting is in tired and distressed condition with fairly large paint losses especially to the lower edges and left flank and there is chipping to the frame particularly to its extremities, ie the corners. It could be restored if one desired though we feel it is charming as it is in many ways. We have stabilised the paintwork so that it should not flake anymore. The signature to the bottom left corner is only part visible due to paint loss.
The depiction of a dog in a kennel was a fairly popular subject in the nineteenth century and with artists of the naïve style in particular. This artwork works beautifully well with the dog protruding out of the kennel, and almost out of the picture itself, amidst the gloomy dark ground and the stone arch gives us a frame within a frame.
This is an appealing picture of good size with indisputable charm, dark and intriguing yet uncomplicated and friendly. Maybe a bit like the dog…
