We are delighted to offer for sale this 19th Century Watercolour by the Italian artist Cesare Provaggi, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner Provaggi, but if you look closely, you can see that he has curled the beginning of the P into a C. The painting depicts a view of a palazzo courtyard, with a colonnade to one side, with the walls hung with tapestries or murals, and a pool in the foreground, where a couple of beauties are feeding a pair of swans, standing on a platform jutting out over the water, watched by their two gallants. The lady in the blue dress and black hair, is holding out the food to the swans, while her companion in a coral over-dress, is holding a parasol. The third lady, who is seated in conversation with one of the gentlemen, is wearing a cross around her neck and is holding a fan. A parasol is upside down next to the edge of the pool, which has a plant growing out of a circular pot in the corner.

Unfortunately, as our reference books do not feature Continental artists, and he is not listed in Benezit, biographical details about this artist has proved unobtainable, other than the fact that he is from the 19th Century and Italian.

The painting is mounted, glazed and framed in its original condition. The frame is reeded with straps in the corner and the mount is gilt and inscribed Provaggi. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
