Charles Parsons Knight 1829-97 Oil Fishing Fleet Charles Parsons Knight Oil Painting Fishing Fleet %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed marine oil painting on canvas by the renowned Bristol marine and coastal artist Charles Parsons Knight, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a fishing fleet returning to harbour in quite a rough sea, with sea birds wheeling over head and low over the waves. Unfortunately, we are unaware of the location.

Charles Parsons Knight was born on the 15th February, 1829, one of the sons of the Reverand Canon Knights rector of St. Michael's on the Hill, Bristol. He was educated by his father, as scholar, who was friends with the artists and literary men of Bristol. He drew shipping in the Port of Bristol as a boy, but entered service as a midshipman in Messrs. Green's liners. However, after one voyage to Calcutta and back, he decided that the sea was not for him and gave it up. Although without a regular art master, he drew and painted in the life school of the Bristol Academy.

Initially he painted scenic views of Somerset and Devon, but he loved ships and the sea and these subjects, as well as skies, became a large part of his repertoire, and he is known as a coastal and marine painter, primarily.

He exhibited from 1857-1896 in London and the provinces, including 33 at the Royal Academy, 22 at Suffolk Street, and 48 at other venues in London, a total of 103 in all, up to 1893 and listed in Graves Dictionary. There are 11 of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be viewed, with their locations, at ArtUK.org.

We have been unable to find much information about his life from the Census records, as he only appears in 3 three that we could trace. In 1841 he was 12 and at home with his parents. Then a gap until 1881 and 1891, where he was lodging in London, in 1891 at the Great Western Hotel and in 1891 at 11 Eaton Terrace. Apparently he had poor health for some long period and died in St. John's Wood, at an address close to his studio, on 22nd January 1897 leaving some large, unfinished works, despite his state of health. He never married. His obituary appeared in the Western Daily Press on 1st February 1897.

There were two retrospective exhibitions of his work, one at the Fine Art Academy in Bristol in September and October 1897 and the other at the Carlton Calleries in Pall Mall in 1898. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 5/8" reeded gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
