We are offering this very attractive oil on canvas by the Danish artist Cornelijus Schipper, who has signed the painting Co. Schipper in the lower right hand corner. The painting is undated and depicts a shore or coastal scene of great tranquillity. There is a horse and cart by the edge of the water with its owner collecting shrimps, or possibly cockles, from the sea with a long handled net. There are a souple of roughly woven basket at the edge of the water and seagulls are wheeling overhead possibly waiting to grab a morsel.

It is very difficult to provide a full biography when the artist isn't British, but what we have managed to glean from the web, although his surname is primarily Dutch in origin, is that he was Danish and born in 1915. Some sites, erroneously by the age of the canvas, say that he was born in 1815, but we have discounted this. It also states that he studied in Copenhagen under an artist called Nilson and then moved to Utrecht in The Netherlands, although we cannot verify this, nor can we find en entry for him in Benezit

His oil paintings, which are primarily marines, seascapes and coastal scenes do come to the market and some examples of them may be soon on google images.

The painting is framed in a subtly coloured 3 inch mottled pale green and gilt frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on canvas

Condition: Very good. The surface is clean and there is no craquelure. There is one tiny repair to the canvas as shown on the back, but cannot be seen to the front. The frame is in very good condition..
