This is a beautiful porcelain figure of Neptune with a dolphin, by Derby porcelain factory in excellent condition circa 1780. The figure is boldly hand painted in delightful coloured enamels and has a lovely strength of colour.

Neptune was introduced around 1760 at Derby when Andrew Planche, a Walloon Huguenot refugee began making porcelain figurines and animals for the Staffordshire enameller William Duesbury who in partnership with banker John Heath started the new porcelain factory with Planche which was to grow into the largest factory of its time, buying up the bankrupt Chelsea and Bow factories, as well as the stock of several other workshops including that of James Giles. The company was awarded a Royal warrant by George III in March 1775 appointing them “China manufacturers in ordinary to His Majesty”

The combination of various traditions, porcelain making skills and sophisticated clients enabled Duesbury to create one of the best porcelain factories of the 18th and 19th centuries which is still in production today.

This figure dates from around 1780 and remarkably is in excellent condition. There is a small firing line as photographed from manufacture in the kiln as shown. It stands 15 cms tall without the trident.
