Doulton Lambeth Impasto Vase by Rosa Keen 1887

Doulton Lambeth Impasto stoneware vase by Rosa Keen 1887. Footed ovoid inverted baluster form body with waisted neck and everted rim. Impasto painted design of flowering Morning Glory with large white trumpet flowers encircling the body. Unique design loosely painted in good impasto relief on a deep-amber ground. Impressed marks to base for Doulton Impasto dated 1887. Incised artist's monogram RK for Rosa Keen and assistants MD and F (unknown). The vase is 19 cm in height.
This vase is in excellent original condition commensurate with age. No chips, cracks or restoration. Please see further images on our website as these form an important part of the description.
Doulton's "Impasto Ware" developed in the late 1870s was one of the most artistic and unusual products of the Lambeth Pottery. Different from Faience in that the decoration was applied to the raw clay which caused the applied colour to thicken. The artist could then build-up colour giving a depth to the design in relief. Impasto production peaked in the 1890s however was discontinued by 1914. Rosa Keen had previously worked at the Minton Art Pottery Studio before working at Doulton Lambeth from 1882 to 1892. She was on of the chief exponents of the Impasto technique. Viewing welcomed - please contact us in advance.
