Edwin A. Pettitt 1840-1912 Oil Board Barmouth

We are pleased to offer this attractive coastal oil painting on board by the artist Edwin Alfred Pettitt, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it At Riog Barmouth, or at least the previous framer has written this on the back. As it was so nicely framed and taped, we can only accept this is on the back, as it seemed a shame to open up the back. So, it may be an oil on board, or an oil on canvas laid to board. We suspect the painting was executed in the 1880s, while the artist was living in Denbighshire. We have been unable to discover where Riog is, although the Welsh translation of riog is ribbon.
Edwin Alfred Pettitt was born on the 1st May 1840, in Birmingham, the son of the artist Joseph Paul Pettitt, 1812-1882 and Mary Ann Pettitt. (There are 7 of his father's paintings in the National Collection.) He had 5 siblings and 10 half siblings and presumably was taught by his father.
In 1851 Edwin was living in Cockermouth, Cumbria, in 1861 at Chilton Lodge, Parsons Green Lane, Fulham in London and by 1871, he was living with his uncle Alfred Pettitt who was a landscape artist in Keswick, Cumberland. In 1881, he was listed as a landscape painter and was living at Park Hill, Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales. By 1891, he was living at Sea View, Wilder Road, Ilfracombe, Devon and was still there in 1911, where he died on the 26th November 1912.
He married his wife Martha (nee Swain) in Marylebone, London on 14th June 1869 and they went on to have 6 daughters, Lucie Rose 1871, Florence Gwendoline 1876, Amy Beatrice 1877, Frances Lillian 1879, Catherine Daisy 1881, Dorothy G. 1891.
6 of his paintings are in the National Collection and may be viewed at ArtUK.org. There are 76 auction results for his paintings on artprice.com and 46 on Arcadja.com.
The painting has been expensively framed in a 2 1/8 inch speckled gilt frame and gilt slip and will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Frame size: 24 1/8 x 18 1/8 inches - 61.3cm x 46cm
