Female Nude Study Henry Southgate Sands RBSA 1928

The unframed oil on canvas by Henry Southgate Sands RBSA (1900-1971) of fairly generous proportions depicting a full length nude female perched on a stool with a scarlet curtain on a sea green ground, pictured in the artist’s studio in 1928, the work signed and dated verso.
In entirely untouched and original condition the canvas does have some losses with two areas of canvas damage as per the photographs. The picture has not been cleaned or restored in any way and as such is decorative.
Verso we see the canvas is annotated ‘Henry S. Sands for Annual 1928’ and a stamp for “C. Roberson & co. ltd., 99 Longacre, London” (Roberson’s were based at 99 Longacre from between 1853-1937).
Henry Southgate Sands, RBSA (British, 1900-1971) was a Londoner by birth. He won a scholarship to the Camberwell School of Art in 1914 and was apprenticed as a textile designer in 1916. He returned from his war service in 1920 to embark upon a career of some distinction as an illustrator, portrait painter and mural artist and would have been twenty eight when he painted this picture. He designed the 'Plays in the Park' mural which adorned Birmingham Town Hall in the early 1940s during which time it is also believed that he served as the President of the R.B.S.A. Several of his works have sold at Bonhams over the last few years.
A simply wonderfully realized and brilliantly executed portrait painting.
