Frank Holme Orientalist Gouache Camel Riders

This item is a subtly toned orientalist gouache by the early 20th century artist FRANK HOLME, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a desert scene with two camel riders crossing the sand dunes, with a large mosque with several minarets silhouetted in the background, presumably at an oasis, either in a sandstorm or at dusk.
FRANK HOLME, who flourished in the first twenty years of the last century, was a British artist who specialised in arab scenes, moorland and highland views. He does not appear to have exhibited his work as we can find no listing for him in our reference books, which only show details of artists who have exhibited at major exhibitions. He probably found a ready market for his work without needing to exhibit it.
Auction results for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites and the arab scenes seem to attract higher prices. In October 2010, Christie's London sold a 9" x 5 1/2" gouache by this artist, together with an unsigned work by another artist, and the lot achieved £600.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
