G. P. Ashburnham 1826-1897 Watercolour after Prout George Percy Ashburnham 1826-1897 after Samuel Prout Chapter House %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
GEORGE PERCY ASHBURNHAM, is listed in the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu who states that he was a landscape and architectural painter, who was the grandson of Sir William Ashburnham, 5th Baronet. In the 1870s and 1880s he produced very competent copies of Samuel Prout's Gothic watercolours.

Please note that this artist is often listed with the dates of 1815-1886. This is totally incorrect, as we have found his birth, baptism, marriage, death and many census listings for him, and he is the only artist with these names.

This is a watercolour with a huge amount of detail, showing the entrance to a cathedral or the chapter house of a cathedral, with a tall carved stone pillar or column with full length figures of saints or ecclesiastical figures around it. There are two boys who appear to be begging at the foot of the column, while inside there are many people, including two clergy in a chapel to the left rear. A man and a woman wearing a starched white regional bonnet and clogs are standing looking in to the building. Shafts of light are coming through the windows to the right.

George Ashburnham was born in Hastings in East Sussex in1626. the son of George Willian and Hannah Ashburnham. In the 1861 Census, he was living at 3, Beavor Lane, Hammersmith W.6. with his wife Francis Elizabeth and is listed as an artist.

However, we can find no trace of a marriage, or a divorce or death of Francis Ashburnham and, in the 1871 Census, he was listed as an Annuitant and watercolour painter, now married to Jane nee George, who he married in 1867, living at 2 St. Mary Terrace, Richmond, Surrey with his daughter Henrietta aged 3, born 1868, a son Bertram aged 1, born 1870, died 1879, and a lodger.

In the 1881 Census, listed again as an artist, he was living at Talbot Cottage, 2 Talbot Road, Twickenham with Jane, Henrietta 13, Alicia M. 7, Percy 5, and Anchitel 2, born 1879.

in 1891, George was living at 53 Hampden Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, with a married couple, while Hane and the children, including Anchitel, Reginald born 1883, Alice M, born 1886, were living at 6 Knowle Road, Twickenham.

George Percy died in the first quarter of 1897 in the Kingston area, while Jane lived with her daughter Alice Mary, who was a music teacher, until 1933 when she died.

The original Samuel Prout watercolour of this scene was last sold at Sworders in 2020 for £800. This painting is a very good copy in every detail. Unfortunately, the original didn't list the location, just that it was in the chapter house of a cathedral. The location is probably in either Belgium or Northern France, but if anyone recognises the carved pillar and knows where it is located, we would be most grateful if they could let us know. We have tried searching for the carved pillar in those countries but so far have been unsuccessful.

Listings of his auction results may be found at artprice.com, artnet.com and findartinfo.com Two of his watercolours achieved £650 at Bonhams in 2003. He does not appear to have exhibited his work.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8 inch soft bronze/gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
