Gaetano Facciola 1868-1949 Watercolour Appian Way

We are offering for sale this detailed and very well executed watercolour by the Italian artist GAETANO FACCIOLA, who has signed the painting G. Facciola in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of the Appian Way near Rome, with the tombs of Roman dignitaries either side of the road. The Appian Way or Via Appia, linked Rome to the seaport of Brindisi in Puglia, in the toe of Italy.
Appian Way: remains of Roman tombs
Gaetano Facciola was born in Rome in 1868 and died in Paris in 1949. He was a watercolourist exclusively, as far as we can ascertain, as we can find no oils attributed to him in recent auction results, and he appeared to concentrate on views of Rome and its environs.
Auction results for this artist may be found at artprice.com (24 listings) and also at findartinfo.com (30), artnet.com and arcadja.com. Two of his Roman watercolours, much smaller than this one, achieved over £600 at auction.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" antiqued gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
Image size: 15 1/2" x 9 1/4" - 39.35cm x 23.5cm
Frame size: 22 7/8" x 17 1/4" - 58.1cm x 43.85cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Excellent in all respects.
