George VI Silver Toddy Ladle, Viner's, 1937
This is a good quality George VI Sterling Silver Toddy Ladle in the traditional Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This is a small ladle suitable for use with sauces in a smaller size sauce boat or of course for serving hot toddies!
The ladle is made in Sheffield by Viner's Ltd and dates to 1937. Founded around 1901 by Adolphe Viener, who later changed his name to Viner, Viner's Ltd was a very successful firm of silversmiths and electroplaters up until the 1970s when they experienced financial difficulties and eventually ceased trading. The name is now owned by the US company Oneida.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 85 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 12.3cm / 4.8ins long and 3.9cm / 1.5ins across the bowl. It weighs a respectable 29g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1937 and the EV makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.
