Georgian Oak Cupboard Dresser. North Wales,Circa 1800
This is a very handsome Georgian Oak Cupboard Dresser. It has 6 drawers, and 2 enclosed cupboards and is in excellent and remarkably original condition. It dates to about 1800, and is from North Wales.
Very well made of joined construction, it is framed, pegged and panelled throughout, including the back and sides which are stained pine and completely original. The door panels have been carefully designed with stepped, round arched tops, which finish flush within their frames, and the casing around each of the drawers and doors and door panels have all been given beaded edges to add outline and definition to their shape. A very nice touch of quality and craftsmanship.
The lower moulding and the bracket feet are all original
The planked top is in very good order. There is a groove along the back for displaying plates.
The inlaid escutcheons are boxwood and the brass knobs are original. The cupboard doors retain their original iron locks. There are no keys but the doors close well and grip the framework securely when closed.
Super colour and patina throughout.
Dressers are just the most useful and versatile pieces of antique furniture. They can take centre stage in a town house drawing room or sit comfortably in the back ground of a cottage or farmhouse. More so than their mahogany counterparts, sideboards & buffets, oak dressers offer an ambience of homeliness and informality.
