Giovanni Filosa Italian Watercolour Neapolitan Man

We are offering this detailed portrait watercolour by the well known Italian artist Giovanni Battista Filosa, who has signed the painting to the lower right. The painting depicts a Neapolitan man lighting his pipe. He is wearing the traditional cap, much beloved by the fisherman of that locality, He is sporting a short white beard. By his clothing he is probably a farmer rather than a fisherman. The execution is exemplary.
Giovanni Battista Filosa was born in Castelammare Di Stabis in 1850, a town about 19 km south of Naples. He was a pupil of Morelli. Filosa was strongly linked to his land of origin and spent most of his life there portraying the places and activities carried out by local farmers and fishermen. In 1874 he spent a few years in Paris where he painted subject in the neo-seventeenth style prevalent there at that time. But the call of his homeland and the subject matters of the natives of the land of his birth called him back to the Neapolitan area, where he painted landscapes and genre scenes, characterised by the accurate descriptive expertise of every detail. He died in 1935 Resina (now called Ercolano, as it is the site of Herculaneum)
The watercolour has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/8 inch soft bronze/gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 13 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches - 35cm x 24.15cm
Frame size: 21 7/8 x 17 3/8 inches - 55.55cm x 44.15cm
Medium: Watercolours on paper
Condition: Very good. There is no fading or foxing and, as you can see, the colours are strong. The mounts and frame are new.
