Gustave de Breanski Oil on Canvas Near Glencoe

We are delighted to offer this lovely oil on canvas by the artist GUSTAVE De BREANSKI, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and entitled it verso Pass near Glencoe G de B. The painting is one of a pair by this artist that we are currently listing. Please see our listings for the other. Glencoe, which means the glen of weeping, presumably because of the Battle of Culloden, is in a mountainous region of Argyllshire. There are two figures herding a small flock of sheep along the path to the right of the water.
GUSTAVE DE BREANSKI, circa 1856-1898, is the younger brother of the famous ALFRED DE BREANSKI, and his son ALFRED FONTVILLE DE BREANSKI. His sister Julia was also an artist, as well as his nephew, Arthur De Breanski. They were all prolific artists. He lived in Cookham Berkshire in 1880, as did his brother, but moved to Kent and then to London by 1890.
Gustave painted landscapes, highland scenes, marines and coastal views, although he specialised in marine and coastal. He painted similarly to his brother but in a broader and more impressionist style.
He exhibited 8 paintings at the Royal Academy, 40 at The Royal Society of British Artists, 7 at The Royal Hibernian Academy, 4 each at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as at other exhibitions in London and the provinces. His exhibition history in London up to 1893 is listed in Gray's Dictionary.
Biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artist, The Dictionary of British Artists by Christopher Wood. His auction results may be found at artprice.com (321 listings), findartinfo.com (148) and artnet.com (229).
The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/3" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
