Harry Sticks 1867-1938 Watercolour Weardale

This is a lovely watercolour by the artist Harry James Sticks, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and signed and entitled it verso 'At Cowshill, Wearhead, Weardale'. Cowshill is a hamlet near the village of Wearhead in County Durham. It is situation at the top of Weardale. The painting depicts a white cottage on a slope above a track, which slopes and divides at the signpost to the right. The colouring of the painting is autumnal and there is smoke coming from the cottage chimney.
HARRY STICKS, (1867-1938) was a member of the prolific Sticks family of painters. He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne and was the son of George Blackie Sticks 1843-1900 and the brother of George Edward Sticks. (See also Henry Sticks 1845-1878, James Sticks b.1813, Andrew James Sticks, William Sticks and William Jr.)
He was taught to paint by his father and painted in both oil and watercolour, usually on a small scale, unlike his father and brother. His paintings were usually of scenes in Northumberland, Scotland and the Lake District. Two of his paintings are exhibited in Shipley Art Gallery. He also travelled on the Continent.
He exhibited 3 paintings at the Birmingham City Art Gallery, 1 at the Royal Scottish Academy, 1 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour and at many exhibitions in the North East.
His biographical details may be found in the Dictionary of British Artist, the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child. There is also some information about him on google, including some gallery listings of works for sale by this artist. Auction results may be found at the usual sites.
