Indian Miniature Painting Of The Red Fort Interior

A beautifully detailed miniature gouache painting of the Diwan-i-Khas in the Red Fort (also known as the Agra Fort) of Delhi in an attractive contemporary oval gilt frame and cream coloured mount, circa 1900.
Diwan-i-Khas, or private room, was where the emperor conducted the affairs of state and met ministers and nobles. Accordingly, this beautiful palace was situated in a more secluded location overlooking the river, far away from the more public areas of the Fort and decorated exquisitely and expensively in keeping with its status. The focus of the interior was the legendary Peacock Throne, a huge, lavishly bejewelled throne which was carried off by Nadir Shah when he invaded in 1739, and was subsequently destroyed. One of the pillars has been partially restored by the Archaeological Survey of India to give an idea of what the Diwan-i-Khas may have looked like in Shah Jahan’s time.
This image is quite a bit larger than the typical oval miniatures on wafers showing this interior, and it has allowed for an extraordinary level of detail in the decoration of the columns, walls and ceiling.
Dimensions: Frame 26 x 33 cm
Painting 8 x 12 cm
Condition: The painting and frame are in excellent condition. The mount has been replaced by modern acid-free board. Provided with eye screws and brass wire it is ready to hang.
