James Tassie 18thC Glass Paste Portrait Medallion

A glass paste miniature portrait medallion by James Tassie (Scottish, 1735-1799) of the Greek statesman and orator Demosthenes in profile, circa 1775.
Born in Glasgow, Tassie developed his special paste in the 1760s and went on to produce portraits of many high profile 18th century and historical figures. His work was exhibited almost continuously at the Royal Academy from 1769 to 1791. There is a comprehensive collection of his miniature portraits at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
The medallion is faintly inscribed to the base 'Tassie F Glasguensis’ (Latin: meaning 'of Glasgow') and is encased in a glass oval with black painted background. This in turn is contained within a painted frame of the period.
The portrait appears to be in good condition with only some dirt particles to the glass casing.
Medallion: 3 x 2.25 cm
Glass case: 5.5 x 4 cm
Frame: 11 x 9.5 cm Currently shipping to UK and USA.
Free shipping to UK mainland on smaller items.

Preferred payment method is bank transfer. Paypal also accepted.
