John E.Nicholls N.S. 1885-1955 Oil 'April Blossom'
We are delighted to offer for sale this wonderful floral still life by the accomplished flower painter JOHN E. NICHOLLS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner, dated it 1949 and entitled it verso 'APRIL BLOSSOM'. The painting depicts an arrangement of apple blossom, magnolia, hawthorn blossom, japonica, flowering cherry and purple tulips in a pottery bowl and is typical of the detailed and accomplished work of this artist.
JOHN E. NICHOLLS 1885-1955, was a London artist and etcher, who lived or painted, according to the address on the reverse of this painting, at 6 Gainsborough Studios, London W.4. The reverse of the painting also bears a label from the G.M. Lotinga Fine Art Galleries, 57 New Bond Street, London W.1.
It has proved impossible to find much biographical information about this artist, but he is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters. He exhibited between 1920 and 1950 and exhibited at the Royal Academy (6 paintings), The Redfern Gallery, the New English Art Club and the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, of which he was elected a full Member. There are examples of his work available on google.

A 24" x 20" floral painting by this artist achieved £2,400 plus premium at Christies in 2010 and another 24" x 20" made £1,300 plus premium at Bonhams in 2014..
The painting is newly framed in an ornate 3 3/4" gilt frame and is ready to hang. The old frame was past its sell by date, but we have retained the original back with its labels and information.
