J.Van Rhijnnen 1859-1927 Dutch Watercolour Autumn

We are offering this large 19th Century watercolour by the Dutch artist Johannes van Rhijnnen, who has signed the painting Jan van Rhijnnen in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a peasant on a country road in Autumn, who appears to be searching for kindling to collect, as he is carrying a backpack nearly full of sticks. It is interesting to note that Christie's Amsterdam sold an oil by this artist described as 'A peasant on a country road in Autumn', so we wonder if this is the preparatory watercolour before the oil. Unfortunately we have been unable to see a picture of the oil to be sure.
Johannes van Rhijnnen or Jan van Rhijnnen was born in The Hague, Netherlands on 13th December 1859. He studied at The Academy of Fine Art in The Hague under J. M. Vrolijk and Willem Roelofs and this city was where he was to live and work for the rest of his life until he died on 17th June 1927. However, he travelled to Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland during his career.
He was an oil painter, watercolourist, etcher and draftsman and his work was viewed as the 'aftermath' of the Hague School, who were a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 & 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the Barbizon School of French painters.
He was a Member of the Pulchri Studio and the Association Arti et Amicitiae in The Hague, where he would have exhbiited. There are examples of his work the The Hague Municipal Museum and the Franz Hals Museum in Haarlem.
The painting is unmounted and is framed in a 1 1/8" cream frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 20 1/4" x 13 5/8" - 51.45cm x 34.6cm
Frame size: 22 5/8" x 16 1/8" - 57.5cm x 41cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good, with no foxing or fading. The frame is in very good condition with only minimal wear.
