A Mid-19th Century Oak Long Case Clock The case of the antique clock is in medium oak and has an opening front door with lock and key. The hood is also in oak and has a flat top and opening glass door flanked by 2 wooden columns. The face is square in brass with ornate decoration to the corners, the face has a supplementary second dial and a day of month aperture and is inscribed JNO Williams Bideford. John Williams is known to have had a difficult childhood until he was taken as an apprentice by Mr Samuel White (Bideford & Torrington ) with whom he worked until he was 41 when he started his own business therefore dating the clock from between 1838 and 1856 when he died age 59.
The movement is an eight day movement and does carry some very light engraving on the front plate believed to say Aug 18 J Williams 1842. The movement strikes the hour to a bell and has recently been serviced
