Max Sinclair Fl. 1880-1900 Oil on canvas Marine

We are delighted to offer another oil on canvas by the accomplished and highly collectable artist MAX SINCLAIR, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting is a marine scene, of vessels entering port, with a clipper ship, a paddle tug and a steamer. On the bow of the steamer is written MOOR. There was a R.M.S. Moor and an S.S. Moor, although the S.S. Moor had two funnels, so we presume it to be the R.M.S. Moor. Typical of the artist's marine scenes, the details of the ships are executed in fine detail. It is possible that the location is Liverpool, as the artist painted many scenes of Liverpool Docks.
This is one of a pair of marine scenes by this artist that we are currently listing.
As MAX SINCLAIR did not appear to exhibit his work, although a quite prolific artist, little is known about his life. The only biographical information we could find about him is listed in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents', as follows-
'Painter of landscapes and marines in oil and watercolour. This prolific artist does not appear to have exhibited, although much of the work was inscribed and dated giving some indication of the period of his work and the location of the subjects. Most of the landscapes are views in Wales and Scotland and the majority date from the early 1880s. The marine subjects include views of the London and Liverpool docks. Many of his paintings were signed with a monogram (see index).'
Auction results for this artist are available on artprice.com (57 listings), artnet.com (54), findartinfo.com (28), arcadja.com (19) and Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. The record price for one of his paintings at auction in recent years has been £3,600.
The painting is framed in a nice 2 1/4" gilt frame and slip which suit it very well. It is ready to hang.
