Noel Denholm Davis 1875-1950 Watercolour Portrait

We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful Art Deco portrait in watercolour and pastel by the renowned portraitist Noel Denholm Davis, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1926. We believe the sitter to be his daughter Joan, who was born in 1906 and would be aged 20 in the painting. She is wearing a colourful scarf knotted around her neck, with a ring, possibly aquamarine, on her first finger. She has a small watch on a black strap on her left wrist.
The reason we think this is that the artist painted an oil of a lady holding a silver casket, which is in the National Collection and was of either his wife or his daughter. As that painting was dated 1924 and the lady, who bears an uncanny resemblance to our portrait, appears to be somewhat older, we believe it to be his wife Judith (Alice Judith nee Smith), who he married in 1905. 'The Casket' is in the Nottingham City Museums & Art Galleries Collection, but can be viewed online by putting the artist's name into artuk.org., along with the other 24 of his works in the National Collection, 21 of them being portraits. He painted Alfred Ball VC and a later portrait when he became Mayor of Nottingham, Lord Trent and William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army to nam a few.
Noel Denholm Davis was born in Nottingham on 10th November 1875, the son of a gentleman in the lace trade, Robert Davis, and one of a large family. He studied at Nottingham School of Art for five years and then in London for another five years at the Royal Academy Schools. He won the British Institution Scholarship. After working for about 10 years in London primarily as a portraitist in oils, he returned to Nottingham and never left the city again.
He painted four panels of frescoes under the dome of the Nottingham Council House (Nottingham City Hall) and a large fresco at the top of the main staircase, which can be viewed on his page on Wikipedia.
He exhibited from 1899-1939, 193 works at the Nottingham City Art Gallery, 13 at the Royal Academy, 2 at the Walker AG in Liverpool and 1 at Birmingham City AG. He was elected a Member of the Nottingham Society of artists in 1908 and became their Vice President in 1923. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club).
He lived at various addresses in Nottingham, including 40 Dunster Road, 23 Newcastle Drive and, in the 1911 Census 11 Musters Road, West Bridgford. At some stage he had a studio in King Street.
After a period of ill health he died suddenly while visiting his daughter Joan, now Mrs. Hallam, in Goring-on-Thames on 21st April 1950, leaving a widow.
The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a very nice 1" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 15" x 12" - 38.1cm x 30.5cm
Frame size: 24 3/4" x 21 1/4" - 62.85cm x 54cm
Medium: Watercolours with some pastel in the background.
Condition: Very good. The mount and frame are in very good condition.
