Original Oil on Canvas by William Pitt - 1856

William Pitt (active 1853-1890) was born at the end of the Georgian period, the exact dates of his birth and death are not known. He worked mainly in Birmingham and is known for his paintings of landscapes, townscapes and villages of the Midlands and South West of England.
This painting is titled ‘The Town & Castle of Laugharne’
Laugharne is a beautiful town on the south coast of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It nestles on the estuary of the River Tâf. This painting completed in 1856 shows the town across to the castle with the Ferry House on the right – a view which still recognisable today.
William Pitt exhibited four paintings at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1890, ten at the British Institute and fifty five at the then ‘Suffolk Street Galleries’. One of his works is held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in LondonIn original gilt frame and with multiple gallery and other labels verso. Along with provenance and the original purchase receipt from James Howell & Company Ltd of Cardiff in May 1968.
In vendor’s family since that date.
Fresh to the market for the first time in more than 50 years, in fine original condition.
