Pair Doulton Lambeth Vases Nellie Garbutt 1888

We are pleased to offer for sale this very attractive Pair of Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vases, by Nellie Garbett, (bears the initials E.G.), with the date letter X for a design of 1888. These vases are marked with an impressed ENGLAND, which dates them to after 1891, however. Although not marked Doulton & Slater Patent, these vases are an early examples of the process invented by John Slater which involved the use of lace fabrics impressed onto the surface of the clay as a decorative technique prior to painting. Although the painting of some of the items using this technique can be rather crude, in our opinion, these vases, on the other hand, are very finely painted in a design reminiscent of Persia.
John Slater (1844-1914) ws the Art Director at Doulton & Co. Burslem until his death. He studied at the Stoke-on-Trent School of Art and Design. He worked at Minton, then Pinder & bourne, before that company was taken over by Doulton. He was involved in the development of various glazes including rouge flambe and patents for the use of transfer printing from photographs onto ceramics. He was also a painter, who signed his work.
